My name is Ciaran, I’m 31 and I like dressing up in spandex every weekend.

No seriously. I dress up as Spider-Man! My company, Event Heroes, aims to provide movie accurate Heroes, Princesses & Villains for any event. Sadly, being a Superhero isn’t my full time job. I am also a Civil Servant which kindly pays the bills.

Father of one, who just turned 13. Help me.

Mums NI Chats With ... Ciaran Mallon of Event Heroes

Q: What is Event Heroes all about?

Event Heroes is a new venture of mine and we provide movie quality Heroes, Princesses and Villains across Northern Ireland. Fully trained and AccessNI checked, Event Heroes is all about creating lasting memories for our clients and even our staff. All it takes is one child to believe and the dream is alive!

Q: What inspired this avenue of work?

It’s something I really enjoy doing. It started back at my first Comic Convention in Belfast and again it always comes back to how it makes other people feel. I think it was channelled in the right direction and Event Heroes was born.

Q: How did you become interested in cosplay?

My son, Ciaran Jr wanted to go to a Comic Convention one year and after some research it seemed fitting to find a costume for both of us. I went as Crossbones, enemy of the Star Spangled Man - Captain America and Ciaran Jr was the anti-hero Deadpool.

Q: Who is your favourite superhero and why?

I would have to say Spider-Man. He faces a battle to grow up really fast so he can deal with situations that he doesn’t really know how to handle and that’s pretty relatable! I had Ciaran Jr at a very young age and had to grow up pretty fast to handle everything life was throwing at me.

Q: If you could have any superhero power what would it be and how would you use it to make parenting easier?

That’s easy, super speed! Chores, meal prep, school prep and business planning all done in a blink of an eye. Or maybe mind reading to help out with all the teenage angst going on in my house right now.

Q: Who is your real life superhero and why do they deserve this title?

Oh that’s easy, has to be my Mother.

Raising 6 children alone on a tight budget. What a hero! We never wanted for anything and learned that if you want something in life, you go out and earn it. Being a parent at a young age and finding yourself with full parental custody of a child (long story) is daunting and the only person I could turn to was my Mother. She guided me in to adulthood even at times when I didn’t really want to and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her.

Q: How do you fit so much into your life being a Father, Partner, photographer, superhero, business man ? What's the secret?

It’s weird seeing your life written out like that!

We could waste an eternity planning out our lives, so you just go out there and get it done. I’d say the secret is don’t think about it, just do it. Everything listed above is something I love doing and sometimes requires little effort so it never becomes a chore. I don’t think I could manage it all if I didn’t enjoy it.

Q: How do you spend your down time?

Event Heroes is my down time! By day I’m a mild mannered Civil Servant and by night (and weekends) I am Spider-Man/Business-Man. Cosplay is an escapism for most and we have so much fun at events and parties that it really makes this business worthwhile.

Q: What 3 pieces of advice would you give your pre-Dad self?

1. Have patience! Some things are just worth waiting for.

2. Learn to manage your money, your credit score will thank you later!

3. Never underestimate the power of family. They will always be there.

Q: What do you think is most rewarding about being a parent?

I think the most rewarding thing is watching them grow and develop. We never really stop and think about our own growth and development and it’s a pretty awesome thing to witness as a parent, knowing that you're involved every step of the way.
