Art and Design education plays a crucial role in the development of children’s minds and creativity.  Art benefits children in numerous ways, it encourages them to develop their fine and gross motor skills, assists with problem solving, enhances neural development, encourages literacy and numeracy development through reinforced learning, boosts creativity, provides the opportunity for self expression and helps children connect and understand the opinions and insights of others.

The Importance of Art and Design for Young People

Therapists tell us that Art is so important because it allows children to process the world around them and express themselves openly.  Self expression is vital for young people because sometimes they cannot verbalise how they feel and art can be a way for them to communicate this with others. They can explore and create what is important and meaningful to them.  It is the actual process which is important as children’s emotions are embedded in their creations.  The work they produce is therefore a true reflection of their inner most thoughts and feelings shared openly with all around them to see.  When the work they have created is received with genuine praise and amazement this boosts their self esteem and confidence. It therefore increases motivation, nurtures team work and strengthens their relationship to their environment.

Children tell us that Art is fun and that they enjoy participating in this activity as it brings them as sense of joy and inner happiness. Creativity is an attribute that is accepted as being one of the main factors for the success of individuals, companies and cultures. Art therefore prepares our children for the future. creative, open minded people are highly desired in all career paths.  Art and creative education increases the future quality of the local and global community and being creative is a lifelong skill that can be used in everyday situations.

Art generates a love of learning and it encourages children to take risks and to be open to new ideas and possibilities.  It allows children to grow and see that sometimes when you make a mistake it looks better that way. So many times l refer to happy accidents which take place in the classroom and sometimes l encourage children to turn their original art work over and see what it looks like from the other side and to their amazement it can actually look better this way. Children who’s curiosity is nurtured are more inclined to ask questions and therefore learn more.

When people question me on the point of undertaking Art and Design and its purpose in education, l remind them that the things they use on a daily basis  have been designed for them to function more effectively. Art and Design underpins the video game and film industry, which in turn contribute Millions of pounds to our economy.  Artists and designers are employed to create images, stories and apps, every commercial product we use such as cars, iPads, our clothes, furniture, houses and much more was created through Art and Design

According to the International Child Art Foundation

“Research indicates that a child who is exposed to the arts acquires a special ability to think creatively, be original, discover, innovate and create intellectual prosperity- key motives for individual success and social prosperity in the twenty first century”

So let’s encourage our children to put down their phones, iPads and Xboxes and participate in Art and Design this summer  We as parents need to assist them to grow and  become the best they can be with an open heart and mind.
