Fairstone Financial Management NI is a leading financial planning firm based in Northern Ireland, and part of one of the UK's largest independent, Chartered financial planning firms in the UK.

Our business was born out of the idea that there was a better way to help our clients with their financial planning needs.

Fundamental to this belief was to build a modern and professional financial planning business with integrity and quality at the heart of the business.

By applying our expertise and experience in an honest, independent way, we make our clients’ financial lives simpler and more easy to manage.
Through our experience, we understand that clients are decisive and receptive to advice. However, with all that life comprises, it can be hard for them to find the time to dedicate to thinking about financial planning.

Often, new clients come to us stuck in a ‘rut’, whereby they feel financially comfortable, but could be making better use of their income or capital.

We also appreciate that for the majority of clients time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you cannot recover lost time.

That is why we have built our business around saving our clients time.

We work with both individual and business clients to provide clarity on their current financial position, developing strategies to help them take control of their finances, and helping to make their lives more enjoyable and financially secure as a result.

To achieve this, we use cutting edge technology which allows our clients to have complete control over their financial lives 24/7, removing any financial hassle from the process.

    Saving for retirement

It’s easy to push saving for your retirement to the back of your mind. Future events have a habit of feeling very distant, until they arrive. It can be a difficult thing to keep track of too; with nobody helping you along the way or checking up on your savings, putting a retirement plan in place can be a lonely experience.

The fact is, most of us are simply not saving enough to enjoy a similar lifestyle to our working days in retirement. A ‘retirement reality’ report from insurer Aviva shows that nearly 1 in 4 employees believe that retirement will be a financial struggle. There are plenty of legitimate reasons why we don’t save enough – more immediate financial concerns will naturally take priority. You can’t save for tomorrow, for example, if it means forgoing your mortgage payments today. A lack of financial education also plays a big role. 85% of young adults, when surveyed, revealed that they wish they had been taught more about finance management through their school and university careers.

The Government’s auto-enrolment workers’ pension initiative has helped and there are around 1 million people saving for their retirement for the first time ever, as a result, but how do the numbers add up? The minimum auto-enrolment contribution rate is 5% of annual income, and despite more than half of workers believing this is the recommended rate of saving, it’s far from it. The generally accepted figure among experts, if you wish to maintain a similar lifestyle in retirement, is a contribution equal to 13% of your annual income. Some of this deficit will be made up by employer’s pension contributions, however, we’re still looking at a wide gulf between actual savings and those that are required.

Investment house, Fidelity, has devised a system it calls the ‘Power of Seven’, consisting of a number of savings goals. Ultimately, it suggests that to comfortably retire at 68, you should have saved the equivalent of 7 times your annual household income. So, if you were to retire with a household income of £50,000, you’d want a pension pot saved of £350,000. The exact figures will differ from case to case, so it’s recommended to use an online pension calculator to understand your personal situation and check it regularly to keep yourself updated.

There are steps you can take to bolster your pension pot. It’s down to you to take responsibility for your finances, and even small steps like being a member of the works pension scheme and using tax friendly Savings Accounts can be helpful. If you receive a pay increase, perhaps allocate half of it to your savings or investments and enjoy the other half now. As tempting as it can be, it’s important to foster self-control to turn down opportunities for frivolous spending – think about tomorrow and give yourself more options in your golden years.

If you have any questions around this topic, please feel free to get in touch with one of our pension specialists.

Are ISAs continuing to be attractive?

Take-up appears to be declining amongst younger generations, as the total number of adults saving into an ISA fell from 11.1m in 2016/17 to 10.8m last year. With so many opportunities available to young people these days, perhaps it shouldn’t be so surprising that saving into an ISA is losing its appeal?

Saving for retirement is one of our greatest financial priorities, especially as life expectancy is growing and retirements are likely to last longer. It may be the case that you’d prefer to take the reins and have more control over your pension pot. For appropriate investors, one option to consider is a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP).

Unadvised retirees who are now able to dip into their pension are having to return to work to cope with juggling their finances, according to a new report.

Pension freedoms have given individuals control over how to spend their retirement savings, but a number of unintended consequences have emerged. Since rules governing how pensions can be taken were dramatically relaxed in 2015, more than a million over-55s have gone on a freedom-fuelled spending spree.

Care fees, inheritance tax and contested wills are all increasing... so how much of your family wealth is protected?

The new Residential Nil Rate Band Allowance has not increased the Inheritance Tax threshold to £1 million! Government U-turns on a care fee cap means more families than ever are losing their wealth in care fees. More Wills are being contested, with legal fees and court costs eating into family wealth, whilst the UK continues to have the highest divorce rate in the EU.

This means more family wealth is being lost to the local authority, HMRC, excluded beneficiaries and the ex-son-in-law or ex-daughter-in-law!

Question: Can you legitimately stop your family wealth being lost to Inheritance Tax, divorce or moving outside the family bloodline etc?
